Snead Sophomore Awarded Fishing Scholarship
Snead State sophomore Chasten Beck has been awarded a full ride to Lander University in South Carolina to continue his fishing career.
This year marks the second year for the Snead State fishing team. Beck, the founder and president of the fishing team, proposed the idea. Snead State Biology Instructor Tom Warren serves as the fishing team’s sponsor.
“About a year and a half ago our athletic director, Mark Richard, approached me about being the sponsor for the fishing team Snead State was looking to start. That is when I first met Chasten,” said Warren.
“I was extremely impressed with the detail and effort Chasten had put into it. Under Chasten’s leadership as team president and with the support of the faculty, administration, staff and team members, this endeavor has been a big success.”
The fishing team competes in fishing tournaments across the country. In its first year, half of the team qualified for the national tournament and finished in the top 15-percent in end of the year point standings. More importantly, over 80-percent of the team earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
“My time at Snead has given me the opportunity to travel and fish lakes that not everybody can say they have. It has also given me the opportunity to meet some of the coolest people I know and further my education,” said Beck.
“I will be graduating from Snead State in the Spring of 2017. My scholarship from Lander University in South Carolina is paying for full tuition and housing.” He will begin his studies at Lander University next fall.
“Chasten is the first team member to earn a scholarship, and it was a full ride out of state. I hope that he is the first in a long line of students who leave Snead with a scholarship to continue their education at the next level,” said Mr. Warren.
