Snead State Alumni Celebrate the Roaring ‘20s

Snead State alumni celebrated the Roaring ‘20s and All That Jazz during the 2016 Alumni Homecoming on Friday, May 6.

The 2016 Alumni Homecoming wasn’t just a time to pay tribute to the 1920s. It was a time to recognize the significant contribution of the 2016 Alumnus of the Year, Bobby Weathers.

“Mr. Weathers has lived in Boaz all of his life, and his family is a legacy here at Snead State Community College. He has always embraced a desire to do whatever he could to make his community a better place to live and work. Anyone who knows Mr. Weathers knows that he doesn’t do any of the civic work he does to receive recognition. But to me, that’s one of the reasons why he’s deserving of this recognition,” said Snead State Alumni Director Shelley Smith.

His service to the community includes involvement in several civic organizations such as the Boaz Jaycees, the Boaz Civitan Club, and the Boaz Chamber of Commerce. He was a charter member of the Boaz Rotary Club and has remained an active member ever since. He was involved with the small business division of United Way of Marshall County, and he has served on the board of directors for the Boaz City Schools Foundation, known now as the Pirate Foundation.

Mr. Weathers currently serves on the Snead State Foundation Board of Directors. Recently he was recognized by Boaz Chamber of Commerce as the 2016 Citizen of the Year.

He graduated from Boaz High School in 1966. He attended Snead and later graduated from Auburn University in 1970 with a degree in mathematics. He then came home to Boaz to begin working with the family business. That business, Weathers Hardware, continued to grow and is now a signature part of our community.

“I had the privilege of contacting Bobby to tell him he was chosen as our 2016 Alumnus of the Year. His response was simple: ‘I am honored. Mother would be so proud.’ His mother, June Weathers, was one of the students in the last graduating class of 1935 when the college was still John H. Snead Seminary,” said Mrs. Smith.

The evening also included entertainment by The J Robinson Trio of Birmingham, who performed jazz music from the 1920s era.

Alumni Homecoming is one of several events hosted by the Alumni Association each year. Anyone who joins the Alumni Association can receive information about the events as well as a membership card that may be redeemed for discounts provided by local businesses.
