A student may appeal the final grade received for a course when he or she feels the grade is unwarranted. Two types of appeal are possible.

Informal Appeal
An informal procedure may be used if the appeal occurs during the first five weeks of the succeeding semester.
The student makes a verbal appeal to the instructor. If the appeal is not satisfied at the instructor level the Dean of Academic Services will meet with either the student or the instructor or both the student and the instructor.
The burden of proof in the grade appeal must lie with the student.

Formal Appeal
The procedure may be used if an informal appeal fails to bring closure.
This process consists of a written appeal by the student to the Dean of Academic Services.
This procedure is utilized if the appeal occurs after the first five weeks of the succeeding semester.
The burden of proof in the grade must lie with the student.
The decision of the Dean of Academic Services is final.

Written records will be maintained in the Office of the Dean of Academic Services. The Dean of Academic Services will report appeal findings to the appropriate officials. There is no appeal procedure for final grades if six months of calendar time have elapsed.

* Copies of the grade appeal process are available in the Office of the Dean of Academic Services.

The grade point average during the term in which the course was first attempted will not be affected. Then a course is repeated more than once, all grades for the course, excluding the first grade, will be employed in computation of the cumulative grade point average. Official records will list each course in which a student has enrolled.
Some courses taken on the quarter system may not be eligible for course forgiveness on the semester system.
The course forgiveness policy is automatically applied to the records of all students.

All course work taken, even hours completed satisfactorily, during the semester/term for which academic bankruptcy is declared will be disregarded in the cumulative grade point average.
If three (3) or more calendar years have elapsed since the most recent semester/term for which the student wishes to declare bankruptcy, the student may declare academic bankruptcy on all course work taken during 1-3 semester/terms provided the student has taken a minimum of 18 semester credit hours of course work at the College since the bankruptcy semester/term occurred. All course work taken, even hours completed satisfactorily, during the semester(s)/term(s) for which academic bankruptcy is declared will be disregarded in the cumulative grade point average.

When academic bankruptcy is declared, the term “ACADEMIC BANKRUPTCY” will be reflected on the transcript for the semester/term affected.
